Hurricane Larry is bearing down on the rocky coast of Maine, and all of the guests have canceled their reservations at the family-owned Precipice Hotel. But, with a will to be read and an inheritance to claim, the Bishop Sisters—Vicki, Iris, and Faith—are still planning to arrive as scheduled.

The front desk manager, Rodrigo, and the Precipice’s nineteen-year-old chambermaid, Charley, begin preparations for both the storm and the Bishops’ arrival. Adding to their challenges, they must figure out how to hide Bree, a woman on the run from an abusive boyfriend.

Charley is a compelling protagonist whose desperation to provide for her Nana in a care home with dementia drives her to petty theft. Despite her flaws, her character adds depth and relatability to the story.

However, not even Charley could save the story. Part One drags slowly, making it hard to believe the Bishops wouldn’t discover Bree hidden in the room they all wanted to stay in, especially with Vicki in the room next door. Part Two stalls further as the sisters’ backstories and secrets are revealed, explaining their animosity but slowing down the plot.

Parts Three and Four finally pick up the action, but by then, most of the revelations have already been figured out, leaving only the minor details. The story also becomes quite over-the-top. The epilogue feels unconvincing and doesn’t tie things up satisfactorily.

While I enjoyed the author’s debut, “The Block Party,” I found “One Big Happy Family” less compelling. If you’re a fan of locked room mysteries, this one may not meet your expectations unless they are exceptionally well executed.
