This debut adult novel had me hooked from the start. The opening chapters were gripping, setting the stage for what seemed like a thrilling ride. Ellerly’s stylish escapade quickly spirals into a suspenseful nightmare, making the first half a real page-turner.
However, the excitement waned as the plot progressed. The twists and turns started to feel a bit contrived, and my mind began to wander. The ending, which I hoped would redeem the slow middle, left me underwhelmed and stuck with a 3-star rating.
That said, “The Unwedding” isn’t all bad. There are moments of brilliance, with interesting characters and stylish settings peppered throughout Ellerly’s journey. While it didn’t fully hit the mark for me, I’m open to giving Ally Condie’s next adult novel a shot.
